MCL Injury
What is an MCL Injury?
The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) is one of four primary ligaments in the knee. The MCL helps the knee to rotate and prevent leg over-extension. The MCL is located on the inside of your knee. Stretching or tearing of the MCL is very painful and can cause mobility issues.
What Causes an MCL Injury?
MCL injuries may be caused by:
- Bending, twisting, or a quick change in direction
- Forceful impact to the side of the knee
- Participation in sports like soccer, football, or skiing
- Stop and go movements, jumping, or weaving
MCL Injury Symptoms
Symptoms of MCL injuries may include:
- Knee pain
- Tenderness affecting the knee
- Stiffness in the knee
- Knee swelling
MCL Injury Diagnosis
Our knee specialists can determine if your knee pain is caused by an MCL injury. Your doctor will take your medical history and perform a physical examination. The doctor will check if you have tenderness, swelling, and limited range of motion. Your doctor may also order X-rays or MRI.
