What is a Hip Fracture?
A hip fracture is a break in the upper part of the thigh bone which is located near the hip. If you think you have a hip fracture, you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.
What Causes a Hip Fracture?
Hip Fracture may be caused by:
- Significant trauma to the hip, such as a car crash
- Falling (especially in older patients)
- Twisting the leg while standing (especially in patients with weak bones)
Hip Fracture Symptoms
Symptoms of hip fracture include:
- Not being able to move after a fall
- Severe groin or hip pain
- Not being able to put weight on your leg on the injured side
- Hip stiffness
- Hip bruising
- Hip swelling
- The leg on the side of the fall or impact is shorter
Hip Fracture Diagnosis
Hip fractures are very serious injuries. Seek immediate medical attention at your nearest emergency room if you suspect you have a hip fracture. Your doctor will take your medical history and conduct a physical examination, as well as order imaging tests like X-rays to determine if you have a hip fracture.
Hip Fracture Treatment
If you are diagnosed with a hip fracture, your doctor may recommend:
- Surgery to repair the hip
- Hip replacement surgery
- Physical therapy
- Medication
