What is a Hip Dislocation?
A hip dislocation occurs when the femur has been forced out of its socket. Nerve damage can occur and blood vessels can be torn, causing severe damage and pain. A hip dislocation is a serious injury, and if you suspect your hip is dislocated, you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.
What Causes a Hip Dislocation?
A hip dislocation is caused either by a forceful trauma to the hip from a car crash or from a fall.
- Significant trauma to the hip, such as a car crash
- Falling (especially in older patients)
- Twisting the leg while standing (especially in patients with weak bones)
Hip Dislocation Symptoms
Symptoms of hip dislocation may include:
- Hip pain
- Unable to move the leg
- A lack of feeling in the foot or ankle
Hip Dislocation Diagnosis
Hip dislocations are very serious injuries. Seek immediate medical attention at your nearest emergency room if you suspect you have a hip dislocation. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and order imaging such as X-rays, MRI, and CT Scan to diagnose a hip dislocation.
Hip Dislocation Treatment
Your doctor may treat a hip dislocation by:
- Applying an anesthetic or sedative to the affected area and moving the bones back in to the appropriate position
- Surgery to remove loose tissues and move the bones in to the correct position
