Your doctor will take your medical history and conduct a physical examination including evaluating tenderness and swelling in the injured ankle, if you have trouble putting weight on it or moving in certain positions. If the injury is severe your doctor may recommend imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, CT scan, or ultrasound, to determine if there is other damage to bones or soft tissues.
