What Causes a Broken Ankle​?

A broken ankle may be caused by:
  • Twisting or rolling the ankle
  • A sudden impact to the ankle, such as an automobile accident
  • Repetitive motions from exercise or playing sports

Symptoms of a broken ankle may include:
  • Ankle pain
  • Ankle swelling
  • In severe cases, you may see bone coming out of the skin

Broken Ankle Diagnosis

Do not wait for an appointment if you suspect you have a broken ankle. Seek immediate medical attention at your nearest emergency room. Your doctor will examine your injured ankle and compare it to your uninjured ankle, as well as checking for swelling, inability to move the ankle in certain positions or put weight on it. Your doctor may order additional tests such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or bone scan.

Broken Ankle Treatment

The treatment for a broken ankle will depend on the severity of the injury. Your ankle will likely be immobilized in a boot or hard cast. You may need to use crutches to avoid placing weight on your injured ankle. Your doctor may also recommend:
  • Pain medication
  • Reduction – your doctor will manipulate the bones into their proper alignment
  • Physical Therapy
  • Surgery, if necessary
